Local authorities and experts from international organisations and partners have discussed measures to increase the mangrove restoration and afforestation in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region at a workshop in Hanoi.

Speaking at the June 10 workshop, Head of the International Cooperation Department Nguyen Do Anh Tuan said the Mekong Delta region iss at the forefront of climate change adaptation in Vietnam.

The region has strengthened measures to enhance forest management as well as climate change adaptation and sustainable development with support from international partners.

The workshop is expected to raise awareness of mangrove afforestation and protection for the alignment of planning and implementation of mangrove projects, Tuan said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the launch of a 1.5 billion yuan ($232.47 million) fund on Tuesday to support biodiversity protection in developing countries, as talks continue on a new post-2020 global pact to tackle species loss.

Xi was virtually addressing the COP15 biodiversity summit in Kunming, China, where diplomats, scientists, and conservationists are meeting to lay the groundwork for a global agreement to halt and reverse the destruction of nature, set to be finalised in May next year.

The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) will continue to inject impetus into the China-ASEAN cooperation and the ASEAN community building towards a more open, inclusive and prosperous region, Cambodian experts said in recent interviews with Xinhua.

Launched on March 23, 2016 during the first LMC Leaders’ Meeting in Sanya, a resort city in south China’s Hainan Province, the LMC consists of six countries, namely China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

Pou Sothirak, executive director of the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, said cooperation among the LMC countries has blossomed in areas of connectivity, industrial capacity, cross-border economy, water resources, agriculture and poverty reduction.

“Within the past five years, there have been remarkable results achieved in the implementation of LMC projects,” he told Xinhua.

China said on 22 July its financial assistance to Cambodia is in no way dependent on that country’s support on diplomatic and political issues, such as Beijing’s dispute with other Southeast Asian countries in the South China Sea. A Foreign Ministry statement faxed to The Associated Press said that China and Cambodia are important partners who have “for a long time and from beginning to end engaged in sincere cooperation, mutual support and mutual assistance.”
